Water Purification Basics

Water Purification: Boil, Bleach, Filter
- Boil — rolling boil for 1 minute (3 at altitude). The gold standard.
- Unscented household bleach — 2 drops per litre of clear water, 8 if cloudy. Wait 30 minutes.
- Filter — a 0.1 micron hollow-fiber filter removes bacteria and protozoa. Viruses need chemical treatment or a purifier.
Never assume clear water is safe. Always treat before drinking from an unknown source.
